Branislav Ondruš: For 20 years, Russians have been occupying one-fifth of Georgian territory, while EU continued trading with Russia; EU should admit mistakes and start dialogue
“If we want to do anything about the critical situation in Georgia, we need to go back to the moment when this fantastic candidate for EU membership became an enemy – when the Georgian government turned around and when the EU started affecting its elections,” said MEP Branislav Ondruš in the European Parliament during the debates on Deepening Democratic Crisis in Georgia.
According to the MEP, the EU has to be fair and has to “lay down fair conditions, own up to its own mistakes from three years ago,” and start a dialogue.
“The EU cannot supply the energy that Georgians need and that they are currently buying from Russia. They would have to stop the economy. For 20 years, Russians have been occupying one-fifth of the territory of Georgia, and the EU has been trading with Russia all that time, very happily. Because the Russian army can get into Tbilisi in 48 hours and because Georgia is not a member of NATO, all it can do is not provoke the Russians, because the EU can’t give it any security guarantees.
So in order to have a change in Georgia, the EU has to be fair and has to lay down fair conditions, own up to its own mistakes from three years ago, and start a dialogue. We are the stronger ones. Let’s act with strong words that proceed to strong actions. Otherwise, Georgians, both men and women, will become victims of our unrealistic foreign policy,” he said.
