Border Police arrest two for illegal crossing and migrant smuggling

As a result of joint operational and investigative measures, officers of the Georgian Border Police, the Patrol Police Department, and the Revenue Service have detained two citizens of the Republic of Turkey — I.I., born in 1974, and U.G., born in 1995 — on charges of illegally crossing the Georgian state border and unlawfully transporting a migrant.

According to the Georgian Border Police, the offense is punishable by up to five years of imprisonment.

“Border Police officers detained I.I. at the Sarpi border checkpoint after he illegally transported a Turkish citizen, U.G., into Georgia in a truck he was driving, bypassing passport control and concealing him in the trailer of the vehicle. U.G. was also detained as a suspect. The investigation into the illegal crossing of the Georgian state border and the illegal transportation of a migrant is underway under Articles 344 and 344¹ of the Criminal Code,” the statement reads.
