Batumi City Court hears Mzia Amaglobeli's case

The substantial hearing in the case of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, resumed today at the Batumi City Court, where the judge is currently hearing witnesses presented by the prosecution.

According to information released today, Irakli Dgebuadze, the chief of Batumi police and a key figure in the case was expected to be interrogated in court.

However, the judge announced during the session that today’s questioning would instead involve Mikheil Darchia, the chief investigator from the Guria Police Department, along with another law enforcement officer.

Both the prosecution and defence spent nearly two hours questioning Darchia on various aspects, including the detention process, detention protocols, inspection reports, expert examination conclusions, and other relevant circumstances. Mzia Amaglobeli, who has been detained, was also present for today’s proceedings.

According to official records, Amaglobeli was detained under Article 173 for allegedly insulting police officers. The incident occurred on January 11 when she was initially held for one hour on administrative charges near the Adjara Police Department. Following her release, she was detained again, this time on criminal charges, for allegedly slapping Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze. Mzia Amaglobeli maintained her innocence and protested by going on a hunger strike for 38 days.
