Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs: Silencing dissent by imprisoning opposition leaders unacceptable

“Human rights in Georgia are increasingly under threat, and pressure on opposition voices and civil society is growing,” said Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Austrian FM, the developments in Georgia were discussed at the recent Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

“I once again emphasized that the government of Georgia must engage in a constructive dialogue with civil society and guarantee freedom of speech and assembly.

Silencing dissent by imprisoning opposition leaders is unacceptable! We want to support Georgia on its European path.

We see tremendous potential in a shared space of freedom and prosperity. The Georgian government should pave the way for its citizens – not obstruct it!” she said.
