Ambassador Zalkaliani: Georgis-US relations should strengthen and elevate to new level
“The cooperation between Georgia and the USA and the relations established since the first year of independence do not deserve the current situation. Instead of returning to where we were, we should strengthen and elevate this partnership to a new level,” said Georgian Ambassador Davit Zalkaliani.
According to the ambassador, the discussion between the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and John Bass, the deputy of Anthony Blinken, addressed the current situation between the countries.
“A very interesting and meaningful meeting took place between the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Anthony Blinken’s deputy, John Bass. The parties discussed all relevant aspects of bilateral relations. During the meeting, there was an expression of regret regarding the inadequacy of the current bilateral situation to accommodate the strategic partnership that Georgia and the USA genuinely merit.
There was a detailed discussion about the ways and steps needed to move beyond this situation,” said Zalkaliani.
Davit Zalkaliani indicated that every effort would be made to resolve the current challenges between the strategic partners.
“Georgia expressed hope and commitment to its strategic partnership and cooperation with America. Everything will be done to overcome today’s difficulties because our strategic partnership, established 32 years ago during Georgia’s first year of independence, and the subsequent relationship practices, do not deserve the current state of cooperation between the two strategic partners.
Therefore, after the meeting, I am hopeful that relevant conclusions will be drawn. The current government of Georgia has repeatedly proven its commitment to democratic reforms. All the conducted elections give reason to believe that the October 26 elections will also be held in compliance with international principles and standards,” Zalkaliani said.
According to the Georgian Ambassador, the geopolitical environment in the region was also discussed at the meeting.
“Georgia is America’s main ally in the region, as has been repeatedly confirmed by our actions and cooperation with our strategic partner. Given the current challenging geopolitical situation, it is in the interest of both countries that this cooperation continues in harmony and close coordination.
Therefore, today’s meeting gives me optimism. Our cooperation and the relations formed since the first year of independence do not deserve the current situation. We should not return to where we were, but instead, we should strengthen and elevate this partnership to a qualitatively new level,” said Zalkaliani.
