Agriculture Minister holds talks with wheat and flour producers

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songulashvili, has met with representatives of the Wheat and Flour Producers’ Association and some flour-producing companies.

During the meeting, the parties examined the current challenges confronting the sector, analysed prevailing market trends, and explored prospects for future growth and development.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, particular attention was paid to fostering growth in domestic production, ensuring market stability, and enhancing the competitiveness of the wheat sector. Those present also deliberated on the needs of farmers, ways of improving production efficiency, and the further development of state support mechanisms.

Minister Songulashvili announced that the Ministry would be establishing sectoral advisory councils to facilitate more effective communication with the industry and ensure that farmers’ needs are addressed promptly.

“The ministerial sectoral councils will allow us to meet regularly with representatives of the sector and to examine existing challenges and needs together. This format will support the development of the sector, enable the early identification of problems, and facilitate effective decision-making. Wheat farming is one of the most significant areas of agriculture, and it is precisely for this reason that the views of every stakeholder involved in the sector must be heard,” said Davit Songulashvili.

Wheat and flour producers welcomed the Minister’s initiative, noting that collaboration of this kind would significantly help in addressing the challenges confronting the sector.

“We discussed ongoing developments that are unfolding under the influence of global trends and making themselves felt both across the region and in Georgia, including in relation to the prices of wheat, flour, and bread. It is vital that, against the backdrop of these challenges, we maintain market stability. At the meeting, we set out specific proposals and discussed the means of implementing them. We also agreed that the establishment of sectoral councils will provide an effective platform at which we can regularly examine problems and explore ways of resolving them,” said Levan Silagava, Executive Director of the Wheat and Flour Producers’ Association.

The meeting at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture was attended by Deputy Ministers Lasha Avaliani and Lasha Dolidze, as well as senior officials from the relevant agencies.
