ABC News: Georgian national dies in U.S. Immigration Detention Centre

A Georgian national has died while held at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre. According to media reports, 43-year-old Mamuka Artmeladze passed away on June 4 in the state of Louisiana.

ABC News reports that the agency has sent an official notification on the incident to U.S. lawmakers.

According to the ICE notification, Artmeladze was found unresponsive and was immediately rushed to a local medical centre.

“Despite emergency medical treatment and life-saving efforts, a doctor pronounced Mamuka Artmeladze dead at approximately 11:22 pm,” the notification stated.

ABC News further notes that the official cause of death has not yet been determined and will be established following an autopsy.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Artmeladze was detained in February during an operation in New Orleans. The crackdown aimed at “commercial motor vehicle drivers who were deemed a threat to public safety.”

“ICE detained Artmeladze after it was determined that he did not possess lawful status to remain in the United States,” the agency stated.

As reported by ABC News, this latest death comes amid a rising number of fatalities in ICE detention facilities; a trend that is drawing increasing scrutiny and criticism from both lawmakers and migrant rights advocates over conditions within the centres.
