19 candidates compete for Public Defender’s post

Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced at the briefing that nineteen applicants would contend for the job of Georgian Public Defender.

The Assessment Commission has until October 13 to report its conclusions. The four requirements—excellent reputation, objectivity, education, and experience—must be met by the nominees.

The parliamentary group will select at least seven candidates from a pool of 19 to go to the next round by October 21.

Non-governmental groups on September 27 nominated Ana Abashidze, Giorgi Burjanadze, and Nazi Janezashvili for the position of Public Defender of Georgia.

On September 22, the Parliament approved an open ballot initiative to elect a Public Defender.
