Kate Fearon – Closure of checkpoints creates difficulties to locals residing in Akhalgori

Locals, who were affected by the conflict and residing beyond the Administrative Border Line, face difficult living conditions – Kate Fearon Deputy Head of Mission/Chief of Staff of European Union Monitoring Mission (EUM) to Georgia told Georgian First Channel.

According to Fearon, the mission staff is patrolling around Chorchana-Tsnelisi area during day and night and talks to locals on a daily basis when patrolling to report how the administrative border line affects their everyday life. “We believe that all entries between the so-called South Ossetia and Tbilisi administrative territories should be opened every day,” Fearon said.

As Fearon claimed, closure of checkpoints limits free movement of people. These people face difficulties regarding accessibility to food products and medicines especially during the winter months.

According to Fearon, closure of checkpoints especially creates problems to locals residing in occupied Akhalgori town and the situation turned to the worse after Russia set customs barriers from the north.
