Iranian FM, Georgian top officials discuss security issues in view of last year hostilities in region

Overcoming pandemic-related upshots, restoring transport relations, and cooperation between two countries were in focus during Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s meetings with the Georgian officials, Deputy Georgian Foreign Minister, Alexander Khvtisiashvili, said on Thursday.

The current regional developments were discussed during the meetings, Khvtisiashvili noted.

“Iran’s view on the new geopolitical situation was interesting for us. Iran was also interested in our vision regarding the regional situation after hostilities. The Georgian side stressed the importance of cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia to ensure lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. Georgia expressed readiness to promote mutual understanding between the three countries of the South Caucasus, to be a platform for peace talks between the parties,” Khvtisiashvili stressed.

Deputy FM also echoed rumors that Georgia would involve in a peace platform with the participation of three countries in the region, and with Russia-Turkey-Iran.

“Society and international partners know that Georgia’s participation in a peace platform with the occupant country is unthinkable. As for developing economic relations, we welcome that move, but any future relation should base on mutual respect and recognition of fundamental principles, in particular sovereignty and territorial principles,” Khvtisiashvili added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid a working visit to Georgia on Thursday. Iranian officials met with the Georgian Prime Minister, Georgian President, and held a telephone conversation with his Georgian counterpart Davit Zalkaliani.
