Georgia offers Azerbaijan, Armenia mediation platform in Tbilisi

The Tbilisi Platform for Dialogue will be set up to make the South Caucasus Peaceful Neighborhood Initiative permanent, said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

Garibashvili claims Georgia suggests mediation to its brotherly states, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

PM dubs Georgia’s mediation as a ‘rare precedent’ when Azerbaijan exchanged 15 Armenian soldiers for the maps of minefields in the territory of the Agdam region in June.

“It was a truly unprecedented case that has ever been recorded since we regained our independence,” PM stressed.

“The US and the EU strongly back this initiative,” stated Georgian Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

“Strengthening the mediation process, implementing important economic projects in the South Caucasus are entailed in this initiative,” Zalkaliani explained.

The PM-tabled format also envisages cooperation in the field of economy and logistics. On top of that, it includes the development of transport infrastructure, enhancing interpersonal relations, cultural, and humanitarian issues, FM Zalkaliani added.

In his address at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Georgian PM said, “Georgia stands ready to host an international gathering in Tbilisi to discuss the prospects of the Peaceful Neighborhood Initiative involving the ‘South Caucasian brothers’ and international partners.”

“This format will facilitate dialogue and confidence-building and lead to the implementation of practical solutions to regional issues of common interest with our US and EU partners,” Garibashvili underscored.
