GD MP to urge local election observers to adhere to standards

Parliamentary majority MP Shalva Papuashvili urges local election observer organizations to guide with minimum standards for their interim reports do not turn into disinformation tools.

During the news briefing, Papuashvili introduced the media with facts related to the pre-election process in Georgia. He said the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party analyzed the reports of three organizations – Transparency International-Georgia, Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) and Fair Elections (ISFED).

The analysis revealed that the organizations used different terms that could mislead the public and be deemed misconceptions. “Such statements make it vague for the public that a particular political entity violated the law if its actions simply do not comply with the internal standard set by a particular organization,” Papuashvili claimed.

Georgian Dream ruling party’s representative said the reports also contained indirect evidence and stories provided by third parties. Papuashvili apprised that the GD regularly informed the local and international election observers about violations committed against the ruling party, revealed during the pre-election period, among them alleged bribery, use of administrative resources, menacing.

“We emphasize that it is important that all political forces are monitored equally during the pre-election period, and that the reported cases must be based on facts and not just retellings or perceptions for the elections to be fair,” Papuashvili stated.

The local elections are scheduled for October 2 in Georgia.
