French Interior Minister: Georgia is a safe country,  it is not normal for Georgia to be a leading country in terms of the number of asylum seekers in France

Georgia is a safe country,  it is not normal for Georgia to be a leading country in terms of the number of asylum seekers in France, – French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said at a press conference in Tbilisi.

As the French Interior Minister noted, Georgians can travel everywhere, including France, but it is not normal for Georgia to be one of the leading countries in terms of the number of asylum seekers in France, because Georgia is a safe country.

He said, that the desire to cooperate in this field was expressed.

“Georgians can travel everywhere, including France, but they dream about El Dorado, though they often cannot find the expected conditions in some countries, for example in France. It is not normal for Georgia to be one of the leading countries in terms of the number of asylum seekers in France. The current situation in Georgia does not justify this. There is no war in Georgia, so this country is considered by the French and European people as a reliable partner. Georgia is a dynamic country and the number of asylum seekers from Georgia is a kind of anomaly.   We had a very important conversation in this direction. France is not able to accept all who need protection. We regularly work on this issue, to return these people back to their homeland.

Some people arrive in France for medical purposes, whereas in Georgia there is an opportunity to receive appropriate treatment. We will only accept those who really need our assistance in this regard.

I am glad that such kind of fruitful cooperation and conversation are underway. We must fight against the illegal emigration”, -Christophe Castaner said.

Within the visit to Georgia, Christophe Castaner met with Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia today.
