Parts of the Italian city of Venice have been left under water after the highest tide.

As Italian media reported a 78-year-old local had been killed by electric shock as the waters poured into his home.

The waters peaked at 1.87m (6ft), according to the tide monitoring centre. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro called it a “dramatic situation”.

“The situation is dramatic. We ask the government to help us. The cost will be high. This is the result of climate change,”-  Luigi Brugnaro said on Twitter.
