V-Dem ranks Georgia among top 10 countries with democracy progress

Georgia is ranked among the top 10 countries with a decade of progress in democracy, based on the Democracy Report 2023: Defiance in the Face of Autocratization of the V-Dem Institute (Varieties of Democracy), an independent research organization.

Two democratizing countries are found in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Armenia and Georgia, the report says.

“Georgia was already classified as an electoral democracy in 2012 but has improved further,” it reads.

Also, according to the report, seven countries declined substantially: Belarus, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Poland, Russia, and Serbia.

Denmark ranked 1st place in the Democracy Report 2023. Second and third places went to Sweden and Norway, respectively. Georgia outruns Poland, Hungary, North Macedonia, and Montenegro.
