US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan once again commented on Supreme Court appointments on Sunday, saying “it is very disappointing that this went forward, especially when there are so many other priorities that are not being addressed in parliament.”
Ambassador Degnan said “It is difficult to understand why this needed to be rushed through. There are also five positions, the non-judge positions on a High Council of Justice (HCoJ) that have been vacant for months.”
“There seems to be no urgency to fill those positions, even though they have been vacant for months and those non-judge positions on HCoJ are supposed to represent the voice of the people of Georgia under your Constitution. So, again, it is just hard to explain why this needed to be rushed through when the same people in parliament, including the ruling party, agreed that comprehensive judicial reform was needed. I hope Georgians will see a similar urgency to enact comprehensive, meaningful, inclusive judicial reform in consultation with stakeholders,” she underscored.
