UNM's Pavlenishvili: Opposition Alliance launches two-month mobilisation drive to dismantle regime through sustained protest
“The goal of the Opposition Alliance is to dismantle the system, including by intensifying protest and galvanising its supporters,” declared Irakli Pavlenishvili, a member of the United National Movement.
He added that the two-month campaign is intended to reinvigorate political processes nationwide through the concerted efforts of the opposition parties.
“What has been announced is not merely a rally, but a two-month mobilisation campaign aimed at intensifying political activity by the parties. Regional demonstrations will be held, various public information campaigns will be launched, and, crucially, a major rally is planned for May 26. It is crucial that this protest movement and these rallies do not cease.
We all understand full well that the announcement of a protest rally underscores the two-month campaign as a whole. We all know what this resistance and protest are in service of. How long it will last, we cannot predict, but it is precisely through resistance and protest that this regime must be dismantled,” Pavlenishvili stated.
When asked by a journalist how this year’s May 26 rally would differ from last year’s, when the opposition had rallied around Salome Zourabichvili, Pavlenishvili acknowledged that an effective format for collaboration had not been in place at the time.
“What is new, and what is paramount, we are stating with absolute clarity. At that time, the forces of resistance had not created an effective framework within which people could work together; there was far more room for squabbling than for cooperation. As for the objective of the resistance, what the United National Movement or any other party within the Alliance is working towards, it is very simple. Our goal is to dismantle this system through intensified protests and by mobilising and activating our supporters. That is the declared objective, and the campaign is entirely in its service,” Pavlenishvili stated.
