UNM's Parulava: Georgia's non-irritation policy towards occupied territories has proved absurd
“The Russian stance that Georgian Dream has adopted is not unfavourable to Moscow; on the contrary, it explicitly demands no concessions whatsoever regarding the occupied territories or the return of displaced persons,” a member of the United National Movement opposition party, Lasha Parulava, has stated.
According to him, Russia aims to have Georgia without Georgians.
“Georgia’s position that a non-irritation policy towards the occupied territories would change something has proved to be complete absurdity and a lie. The Russian stance that Georgian Dream has adopted is not unfavourable to Moscow; on the contrary, it explicitly demands no concessions whatsoever regarding the occupied territories or the return of displaced persons.
Russia’s goal is Georgia without Georgians; Russia’s goal is to bring it within its own strategic plan, and this statement serves that purpose. Who is in power in Georgia has no significance for Moscow.
Georgia is of strategic importance to Moscow, and it has a strategic plan. Accordingly, the Ivanishvili regime’s non-irritation policy is damaging to Georgia, because the country has found itself in international isolation due to this choice. Georgia today is in the authoritarian camp and is not a member of the free world,” he stated.
Parulava responded to a statement by Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which claimed that the preconditions for renewing political dialogue between Russia and Georgia do not currently exist.
When questioned by a journalist about whether the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement rules out any links between Georgian Dream and Russia, Parulava observed that the Kremlin’s strategy towards Georgia remains consistent, regardless of who is in power.
“The Russian Federation has its own strategic plan regarding Georgia, which it will not change. Russia had its own defence minister in Georgia, yet its position has not changed. During Shevardnadze’s time, Russia had its own ministers, and today it has a government, but its strategic objective regarding Georgia does not change,” stated Parulava.
