UNM's Bezhashvili: GD aims to abolish European parties; battle to continue in Constitutional and European courts
“Georgian Dream intends to abolish European parties through laws that are fundamentally anti-constitutional, laws which a one-party parliament adopted specifically to serve this Russian political agenda,” stated Levan Bezhashvili, a member of the United National Movement opposition party.
According to Bezhashvili, the very essence of Georgian identity is being compromised today in violation of the constitutional order.
“The United National Movement continues its legal challenge against Georgian Dream’s unconstitutional actions. Georgian Dream is an anti-constitutional force that seized power through electoral rigging and established an undemocratic regime by grossly breaching the Constitution. It has usurped authority as a single-party entity and altered the constitutional framework.
Georgian Dream aims to dismantle the European parties through the fundamentally unconstitutional laws enacted by this single-party parliament, specifically to serve a Russian political model. These laws are now being contested in the Constitutional Court.
A recent law enables the ban of political parties through simplified procedures and stringent deadlines. Nine months is set, after which Georgian Dream can, within just 14 days, abolish a political party. Such measures have no basis in the Constitution and are a direct violation of the constitutional order. The prohibition of political activity for individuals associated with a party, be they family members, donors, or supporters, based solely on GD’s arbitrary criteria, is unconstitutional. This effectively bans political engagement indefinitely, which is fundamentally anti-constitutional.
Furthermore, restricting a political party’s right to file a constitutional appeal undermines its ability to defend its rights. Banning a party based on an unconstitutional provision could render it impossible for the party to seek justice through constitutional channels.
“In short, today Georgian Dream itself is in breach of the constitutional order. This struggle will persist in the Constitutional Court and, naturally, in the European Court of Justice,” said Bezhashvili.
