UNM interim report on Shovi landslide reveals indifference of high-ranking officials

The United National Movement (UNM) party investigated the Shovi landslide and prepared an interim report covering the period from August 3 to 15, which revealed the indifference of high-ranking officials, said UNM Chair Levan Khabeishvili.

Levan Khabeishvili believes that society should have responses to who is responsible and why the tragedy could not be averted.

“This conclusion shows the indifference of specific top officials in this tragedy, which claimed the lives of Georgian citizens,” he said, adding the government is obliged to explain the reasons for the overdue reaction.

The UNM 11-member group arrived at the landslide-hit Shovi resort to inspect the situation at the disaster scene.

Khabeishvili said he did not travel to Shovi to avoid “political speculations,” but if he did, he would have arrived wearing boots instead of shoe covers, not to “insult deceased children and people.”

“You will not find any political speculations or statements. We were not interested in this in a given situation,” Khabeishvili said.

The death toll in the landslide-ravaged Shovi resort of the Oni Municipality rose to 28 on August 21.

A deadly landslide struck the resort on August 3.
