The opposition United National Movement (UNM) party echoed the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia (POG) statement to appeal to the Tbilisi City Court to substitute Melia’s custody with bail if he pays it.
UNM member Khatia Dekanoidze labeled the POG statement as absurd and stressed that Melia would not change his mind.
“It has confirmed again that the Prosecutor’s Office does not exist as an institution, and it fully serves political justice. Nika Melia made his decision. He is fighting for freedom because of political justice and Bidzina Ivanishvili’s political prosecution. Nika is in good spirits. This absurd statement will not change anything at all,” Dekanoidze said.
The riot police detained Melia at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday morning.
