UNM affirms support for Yulia Tymoshenko amid allegations of corruption
The United National Movement (UNM) has issued a statement expressing steadfast support for Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Batkivshchyna party, who is currently facing accusations of corruption. The party emphasises its longstanding relationship with Tymoshenko, recognising her as a dedicated patriot of Ukraine and a prominent figure on the international stage.
In their statement, the UNM conveyed concern over the perception that Tymoshenko may be subjected to unfair treatment, calling for a transparent and equitable judicial process. They expressed confidence in her innocence and her ongoing commitment to the welfare of the Ukrainian people, emphasising that Ukraine needs her to be free and safe, free from further obstacles.
“Our party has a longstanding relationship with Yulia Tymoshenko, a great patriot of Ukraine and a well-known international figure. We believe there is a perception that she may be treated unfairly, and we call for a transparent and fair process. We believe she is innocent and will continue to contribute to the well-being of Ukrainians. Ukraine needs her to be free and secure, without further hindrance,” the statement from the United National Movement reads.
For context, anti-corruption authorities recently searched Tymoshenko’s office. The investigation pertains to allegations that she attempted to offer bribes to deputies from other factions within the Verkhovna Rada in exchange for their votes on specific legislation.
As of January 16, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine ordered Tymoshenko to pay a bail amounting to 33 million hryvnias, confiscated her passport, and restricted her from leaving Kyiv without permission.
