UN Human Rights Council adopts resolution on Georgia's occupied territories

The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on Georgia’s occupied territories titled “Cooperation with Georgia” on October 11.

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia presented a resolution at the Council meeting.

In his speech, Darsalia spoke about the gross violation of human rights against locals residing across the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, confirmed by ECHR and ICC judgments.

Delegations and Council members from Bulgaria, Japan, Luxembourg and Finland made statements in support of Georgia. Twenty-four members voted in support of the resolution.

The resolution reiterates support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The UN Human Rights Council expresses concern over discrimination of Georgians on ethnic signs and calls for immediate and unlimited access to the UN High Commissioner in the occupied regions.

The resolution highlights the significance of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) established based on the August 12, 2008, ceasefire agreement and the role of the Group on Incidents Prevention and Response Mechanisms (IPRM) meetings.

With the adopted resolution, the UN Human Rights Council instructs the UN High Commissioner to present verbal and written reports at the next 58th and 59th meetings on the resolution’s fulfilment.
