Ukraine's Mykhailo Podolyak: We call on Georgian authorities to allow medical transfer of Saakashvili
“We urge the Georgian authorities to allow us to transfer Saakashvili for medical purposes, if not to Ukraine, then at least to another country,” said Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, in an interview with TV Pirveli.
According to him, the issue of former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s extradition from Georgia forms part of Ukraine’s broader agenda.
“As for the possibility of bringing Saakashvili to Ukraine, this is indeed part of our plans. Ukraine is actively pursuing this matter. President Zelenskyy has repeatedly expressed his position regarding Saakashvili, as we consider him a full-fledged Ukrainian citizen.
Of course, we recognise that he is a significant figure in Georgia. We are making joint appeals with our European and American colleagues, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the President’s Office. Once again, we urge the Georgian authorities to allow us to transfer Saakashvili for medical purposes, if not to Ukraine, then at least to another country.
Should a different legal pathway become available, Ukraine’s President will utilise those options. For me, Mikheil Saakashvili’s life is, without doubt, of utmost importance and value,” Podolyak emphasised.
