Tbilisi Zoo reports no animal losses despite extensive fireworks displays on New Year's Eve

Tbilisi Zoo Director Zurab Gurielidze reported no animal injuries because of the New Year’s Eve fireworks, but he remarked the fireworks produced stress and anxiety among the animals, despite the sedatives and anti-stress medications given in advance as a precaution.

“Fear and stressful conditions have repercussions. They may gain various ailments, with stress being the most likely cause,” he stated.

Zurab Gurielidze urged people not to use pyrotechnics.

“The death of a live creature is never justifiable for the sake of a few seconds of pleasure. I strongly advise you not to use fireworks, especially near the zoo. Shots were fired straight towards the zoo on New Year’s. It was not done on purpose, but it happened that way,” he stated.
