Tbilisi Sakrebulo Chair announces major budget shift to enhance city school infrastructure

The first session of 2026 is underway at the Tbilisi City Council (Sakrebulo), where amendments to the capital’s budget are being considered.

As Tbilisi City Council Chairman Zurab Abashidze stated, the budget is increasing by more than 17 million lari, and its volume will be set at 2,210,558.2 thousand lari.

According to Zurab Abashidze, the budget increase is also significant because a certain portion of it will serve infrastructure works at Tbilisi’s state schools.

The Tbilisi City Council Chairman stated that school infrastructure matters will remain the municipality’s prerogative, which is another step towards decentralisation.

“Today, we are implementing a very significant change to Tbilisi’s 2026 budget, which relates to improving the infrastructure of Tbilisi’s public schools. The increased budget will also serve to provide transport for pupils and infrastructure projects to be implemented across the capital.

I would remind you that matters concerning school infrastructure have traditionally been the municipality’s prerogative. This represents another crucial step towards decentralisation, further empowering the role of local government,” stated Zurab Abashidze.

The Tbilisi Sakrebulo Chairman expressed hope that the current year will be even more successful and focused on good works for the capital.

“It is precisely to do good works for Tbilisi that we are here, and the budget increase is a clear example of this,” Zurab Abashidze noted.
