Tbilisi Mayor: Declaring August 7 as start of 2008 Russia-Georgia war is ‘incomprehensible’

Mayor of the capital Kakha Kaladze has called the decision by certain opposition forces to declare August 7 as the start date of the 2008 Russia–Georgia War “incomprehensible”.

Responding to journalists’ questions today, Kaladze noted that existing archival materials provide a definitive answer on the matter.

“This is incomprehensible. Let us look back at when condolences were offered and when the date of the war was commemorated; let us pull up the archival records, which clearly show that it was August 8. You should probably ask the United National Movement why they changed the date. No one can rewrite history; we all know everything full well. Retrieve the specific archival footage, where facts and evidence regarding all of this exist. There is a resolution which they themselves signed,” stated Tbilisi Mayor.

Kakha Kaladze also noted that as a result of the former administration’s actions, the initiation of the war was blamed on the Georgian state and military.

“I emphasise once again that these were treasonous actions against the Georgian state, and they must be answered accordingly. Blame for starting the war was placed on the Georgian state and military, and that is explicitly written. When you sign your name to such things, it is beyond comprehension. In general, everything connected to the 2008 war was driven by the treasonous policy pursued by the government of that time. Naturally, every action of that bloody regime was imposed from the outside. Unfortunately, sabotage and hostile activity against the country continue to this day. We must all work together to preserve peace and ensure the country’s economic development,” declared Kakha Kaladze.
