Study of Gelati Monastery progresses with international collaboration
The ongoing study of the Gelati monastery complex advances. Davit Lortkipanidze, the head of the Scientific Council of the Gelati Temporary Committee, along with experts from the German Institute of Archaeology and a professor from Munich University, arrived at the monastery complex on Thursday.
Archaeology and geophysics specialists will employ modern geophysical methods to analyze the area. This will establish a foundation for the forthcoming excavations and other necessary work.
Lortkipanidze outlined the plans for future action, stating, “In mid-July, we will convene an extended meeting with representatives from the Scientific Council of Georgia and our own Scientific Council. This gathering will take place in Gelati, resulting in a more detailed action plan. Today, we are joined by the head of the Eurasian Department of the German Institute of Archaeology, along with a professor from Munich University. This collaboration merges archaeology and geophysics. The process is a daily endeavour, focusing not only on preserving the frescoes but also Gelati’s development,” Lortkipanidze said.
