Stricter sanctions for unauthorized construction in cultural heritage protection zones take effect on January 11

Tightened sanctions on constructions without permits or violation of permit conditions in cultural heritage protection zones take effect on January 11, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced at the municipal government meeting.

Kakha Kaladze said the fines increased in 2018 but did not prevent the construction with violations.

“Each case distorts Tbilisi’s look and violates the rights of citizens. The acting sanctions did not turn out to be restraint measured for some builders,” he said.

Tbilisi Mayor further informed that, with the support of the Georgian parliament, fines increased by ten times in certain cases. Depending on the status of a construction site, the penalty varies from GEL 150 000 up to 250 000.
