State Minister’s Office: Government makes efforts to protect, further study Abkhazian language
The Office of the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality congratulated Georgia, and particularly those for whom the preservation of the Abkhazian language, culture, traditions, and identity is of paramount importance, on Abkhazian Language Day, observed on October 27.
“The Abkhazian language is a distinguished treasure within Georgia’s centuries-old and diverse cultural heritage. Its uniqueness is an integral part of the historical unity between Georgians and Abkhazians, a reflection of our shared past. Safeguarding it and passing it on to future generations is a collective responsibility and a matter of shared concern.
As a result of the ongoing occupation and the policy of Russification, the Abkhazian language and cultural identity face a serious threat, representing a common challenge both for Georgian and Abkhazian communities. Preservation and development of the Abkhazian language is a key priority for the Georgian government that is reinforced both by the constitutional status of the Abkhazian language and by the state policy of reconciliation and engagement,” reads the statement from the State Minister’s Office.
According to the statement, the government continue to make efforts to protect and further study the Abkhazian language within the Georgian government’s principal and pragmatic peace policy.
“This is considered one of the most significant factors for restoring the historically established coexistence, based on mutual understanding and respect, and the cultural ties with members of Abkhazian society within a united Georgia,” the statement reads.
