SSSG detains former Deputy Economy Minister

The Anti-Corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG), through operative-investigation measures, detained Romeo Mikautadze, former Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development on the charge of misuse of official duties, and legalization of illegal revenues in the amount of several million GEL.

Romeo Mikautadze, who held different state-political high-ranking positions in 2017-2024 misappropriated shares of Hydro Electric Power Plants from energy sphere businesspersons in return for granting them benefits and providing other assistance. He then registered the shares in the name of other individuals.

The investigation determined that Mikautadze obtained non-declared revenues and concealed the source, origin, location and turnover. He also concealed the bank account transfers as well as the real estate property purchased in Madrid valued at 600 thousand Euros.

Further investigation continues under Articles 194 and 332 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. Romeo Mikautadze faces from 9 to 12 years in prison if found guilty.
