Koka Katsitadze, Head of the Special Investigation Service, presented the 2022 annual report to the Parliamentary Human Rights and Civic Integration Committee.
Katsitadze said the agency had focused on inhuman treatment and human rights violations by law enforcers after the Special Investigation Service obtained increased powers on March 1, 2022.
According to Koka Katsitadze, the agency reacted to 2,514 cases in 10 months. “The prosecutor’s office started a criminal prosecution against 153 persons in ongoing cases of the Special Investigation Service,” he said.
He noted that the Service’s independence strengthened through cooperation with the Parliament and in compliance with the 4th priority of the EC’s 12-point recommendations.
The Special Investigation Service recommended the Ministry of Internal Affairs improve the standards of protection of citizens’ rights during arrest and ensure the timely supply of video evidence.
“Our three key priorities are high quality, transparent investigation and concern for the citizens’ rights’ protection,” Koka Katsitadze concluded.
