A dedicated block train service has been introduced between Poti and Baku ports, promising to cut transit times for cargo between the two hubs.

According to the Georgian Railways, the inaugural journey was marked by a ceremonial event at Poti terminal, attended by senior representatives from Georgian and Azerbaijani railways.

“The block train will operate on a regular schedule, streamlining container transport and shortening transit times. It will facilitate the movement of empty containers between Poti and Baku by rail, easing pressure on land routes and reducing environmental impact,” the railway stated.

This initiative aims to enhance the safe and efficient movement of containerised cargo along the Middle Corridor, making the route more attractive and in higher demand,” the statement added.

“With fixed schedules and tariffs, cargo owners will be able to plan precisely when their containers will arrive in Poti and return. This innovation will also be financially beneficial for Georgian Railways, increasing the company’s revenue,” explained Lasha Abashidze, Director General of Georgian Railways.

The railway outlined the route as: Batumi – Poti – Tbilisi – Absheron – Sumgayit – Aliat. Georgia and Azerbaijan now offer a streamlined ‘terminal-to-door’ service for cargo owners.
