Speaker: We are stronger, more sovereign now; have power to end occupation

Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Sunday echoed the Soviet Occupation Day, stating, “This day is one of the most difficult and tragic in Georgian history–the failure of the First Republic of Georgia with the Soviet regime and the occupation of the Georgian state.”

“The occupation continues today. After regaining independence, Georgia faced another uneven fight. Even now, the indigenous portion of our state remains occupied.

Compared to the twentieth century, we are stronger, more sovereign, and confident now. We have the power and the objective of ending the occupation, reawakening the country, and strengthening Georgian sovereignty,” he said.

Under the July 21, 2010 Parliamentary Resolution, February 25 is announced as Soviet Occupation Day.
