Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili once again extended his condolences to the families of the Shovi resort landslide. Speaking about rescue efforts in the disaster zone, he said that rescuers fight disinformation along with the natural calamity.
Shalva Papuashvili noted that the authorities quickly mobilized helicopters, heavy vehicles, and human resources.
“We see that the opposition and some groups wish to blame the government for the natural disaster. They watch all satellite pictures, listen to narratives to find something to cling upon,” he said.
According to the Speaker, the opposition wants to generate hatred amid the tragedy and tries to “filter all words said in this context.”
“Unfortunately, the opposition and certain groups were busy sabotaging it all, this hysteria and disinformation from the first minute, while rescuers were trying to help the victims,” he said.
The death toll in the landslide-ravaged Shovi resort of the Oni Municipality rose to 25 on August 14. Eight people are still missing, and rescue efforts continue at various locations.
A deadly landslide struck the resort on August 3.
