Speaker expects European Council to follow EC’s positive opinion
“We have a positive opinion of the European Commission and we expect the European Council to follow this recommendation both with respect to Georgia and Ukraine and Moldova. It is significant that the European Council meets the expectations that our peoples have,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
The Speaker said he believed the European Council would make a merit-based, European decision adding Georgia should not be a political hostage of political discussion that might take place in different countries.
“As for the opposition’s opinions that any country, because Hungary may have a critical stance toward certain issues, can block the Georgian issue – I don’t know what the opposition’s perception about Europe and European values is.
Our and the EU’s common values do not mean that decisions should be made based on detestation. This dispute or discussion going on in the EU is nothing new and we will not meddle. No matter where this discussion leads, it should not obstruct any country from making a merit-based decision. If this decision is merit-based, then a positive decision will be made in the case of Georgia. I don’t have any other expectation,” he said.
