Speaker emphasizes Georgia's clear aspirations for NATO integration, saying membership to be political matter requiring time, context

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated in Brussels that discussions with ambassadors from NATO member states focused on security issues in the region and Georgia’s aspirations for NATO membership.

As he mentioned, the talks also touched on Georgia’s security challenges.

“We once again received support for our efforts to strengthen ties with NATO. Our discussions also covered Georgia’s security challenges during this challenging period. It included the Georgian government’s decisions to ensure comprehensive security in response to challenges while demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine. Additionally, we addressed issues related to preventing the circumvention of sanctions and received full support from our partners,” stated Papuashvili.

While acknowledging that NATO membership is a political matter requiring time and context, Papuashvili emphasized Georgia’s clear aspirations for integration.

“Georgia stands out as a reliable partner of NATO, engaging in cooperative efforts across various formats, and this collaboration will persist. Regarding membership, it’s evident that this is a political matter requiring its own time and context. The important thing is that our aspiration is clear, necessitating a response from NATO for enhanced integration,” the Speaker declared.

Papuashvili emphasized Georgia’s role as an outstanding partner of NATO, contributing to international security. He highlighted that Georgia’s commitment to peace and security also serves the interests of NATO and the EU, considering the strategic importance of Georgia’s territory for transportation routes.

“Therefore, peace and security in Georgia means maintaining security for the EU,” he added.
