February 25 is the date of Georgia’s occupation by the Soviet Army. State flags are lowered at all state institutions.
State flags are lowered at the buildings of the Presidential Administration, Government Administration, the Parliament, the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff.
In February 1921, the Red Army, following the post-1917 turmoil in Transcaucasia, entered Georgia, which was then the Menshevik-controlled Democratic Republic of Georgia. The Georgian Menshevik army was defeated and the government fled the country. On February 25, 1921 the Red Army entered the capital Tbilisi and installed a communist government, led by Georgian Bolshevik Filipp Makharadze. The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic was established on February 25, 1921.
According to the July 21, 2010 resolution of the Parliament of Georgia, 25 February is declared as the Day of Soviet Occupation.
