Senator Jeanne Shaheen views Zurab Japaridze's detention as "appalling and unjust"

“The detention of Georgian opposition politician, Zurab Japaridze is appalling and unjust,” wrote Senator and and member of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, Jeanne Shaheen on the X Platform.

“The detention of Georgian opposition politician Zurab Japaridze is appalling and unjust. Actions like this prove, yet again, that Congress should stand with the Georgian people in the face of the Georgian Dream government’s crackdown on democratic institutions.” she said.

On May 22, Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, had his bail conditions replaced with imprisonment as a preventive measure.

This decision was made by Judge Irakli Shvangiradze of Tbilisi City Court. Japaridze was detained directly in the courtroom during the hearing.
