Rustaveli Avenue rehabilitation works proceeding at full stretch, says Tbilisi Mayor

“Rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue is actively underway on a project designed to stand the test of time for decades to come,” Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced at today’s municipal cabinet meeting.

According to the Mayor, the milling of the asphalt surface is now complete.

“The large-scale rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue began on July 23, requiring a complete closure to vehicular traffic. From the very next day, Georgian Water and Power entered the site to begin a comprehensive overhaul of the outdated water supply and wastewater networks. This will significantly strengthen the avenue’s engineering infrastructure for the future,” Kakha Kaladze stated.

The Mayor explained that work has also commenced on the pavements to construct underground cable conduits, into which power lines will subsequently be relocated.

“The contractor is actively dismantling existing railings, kerbs, and other infrastructural elements along the pavements to make way for spaces built to modern standards in the next phase. Preparatory works for the rehabilitation of underground pedestrian underpasses are also proceeding intensively,” Kakha Kaladze noted.

He added that dedicated crews are working on site round the clock.

“Crucially, all works are being carried out simultaneously across multiple fronts, significantly accelerating the pace of the project. Materials are cleared, and new construction supplies are brought in during the night hours to avoid heavy vehicle movements throughout the day. We apologise for the inconvenience caused; however, executing works of this scale would be impossible any other way,” Kakha Kaladze said.
