Romania’s FM: Strong EU stance against Russian elections in Georgia shows commitment to Georgian sovereignty
Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana-Silvia Țoiu, has publicly condemned Russia for holding elections on Georgian territory, stating that the EU’s firm position reflects the European family’s commitment to supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and democratic resilience.
Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, FM Toiu stressed the importance of a clear international response.
“First of all, I need to publicly condemn here as well the elections that Russia has conducted over Georgian territory. That is very important to say and to say it very clearly, and I have seen that a lot of the other EU officials have a very clear stance on that,” Toiu said.
“I think that is a sign that we, the European family, are ready to support Georgia’s sovereignty and to support Georgia’s transition to a stronger, more resilient democracy. So I would say that is a positive sign.”
Addressing regional partnerships, Minister Toiu highlighted ongoing discussions regarding energy and infrastructure development in the Black Sea region.
“In terms of energy and infrastructure, Romania is discussing with countries in the region, Georgia being one of those countries, increased connectivity. For us, we must continue this.”
Rebuffing claims that Brussels is avoiding engagement with Tbilisi, the Romanian Foreign Minister clarified the EU’s stance on political dialogue.
“In terms of the dialogue, as you have mentioned, I wouldn’t necessarily agree with your assessment that it has been the European Union that is boycotting the dialogue,” Toiu stated.
“The European Union is always ready to continue the dialogue with countries and governments that show openness, with countries and governments that protect their democracy, that are ready to compete with opposition directly at the electoral polls, not through other types of mechanisms.”
