Construction of a road between Chechnya and Georgia is of political character but has a big importance for the Caucasus – Leader of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov said.

In an interview with Russia media, Kadyrov spoke about the construction of the 66-kilometre Itum-Kali–Shatili road. “I think that this road must be opened in the nearest future so that we can settle relations with our neighbours, namely with Georgia,” he said.

Leader of Chechnya said that there was the need to improve the living conditions of the population and expressed hope that there were people in the Georgian government “who knew the history and how the ancestors lived.”

Chechen state-run TV channel Grozny TV claimed on December 2 of 2018 that local authorities had begun renovating a road to connect the southern Russian republic’s Itum-Kali District with Georgia.

The road, which runs along the River Argun, would potentially cross the border near the Georgian village of Shatili, connecting Chechnya with Georgia’s historical Khevsureti region in the northeast of the country.
