“The Public Defender of Georgia addresses reports circulating in the media, which allege that the Public Defender’s Office responded with a delay to a notification received via its hotline concerning an incident of suspected violence against a prisoner,” reads the statement released by the Public Defender’s Office.

According to the statement, the Public Defender categorically rejects information, emphasizing that the reports are untrue and constitute disinformation regarding the response taken by the Public Defender’s Office.

“On October 19, 2026, at 16:31, a notification was received via the Public Defender of Georgia’s hotline regarding alleged ill-treatment of the accused, Davit Peikrishvili, at Penitentiary Establishment #8, along with a request for him to be visited. The concerned individual was informed that the information would be forwarded to the relevant department and that a visit would be conducted as soon as possible.

On the same day, a representative of the Public Defender of Georgia visited Penitentiary Establishment #8, where the accused, Davit Peikrishvili, declined to meet him. This fact is documented in an official record bearing the accused’s signature.

The Public Defender once again urges media outlets to disseminate information only after verifying it with the Public Defender’s Office,” reads the statement.
