Prosecutor's Office: Court of Appeal replaces bail with custody for former Chokhatauri Council Chairman
The Court of Appeal has granted the prosecution’s appeal in full and replaced the bail imposed on the former Chairman of Chokhatauri Council with custody as a preventive measure.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has released information to this effect.
“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia appealed the decision of Ozurgeti District Court, which had imposed bail as a preventive measure on the accused, the former Chairman of Chokhatauri Municipal Council, in a case of group violence. Based on this appeal, the accused has now been remanded in custody as a preventive measure.
Law enforcement officers arrested the accused in connection with an incident of confrontation at a restaurant in Ozurgeti. He has been charged under Article 126, Part 1a, Subparagraph ‘b’ of the Criminal Code of Georgia (violence committed by a group), which carries a maximum sentence of up to two years’ imprisonment.
The prosecution had requested custody as a preventive measure for the accused, but the court did not agree, instead imposing a bail of 30,000 lari. The prosecution appealed this decision to the Court of Appeal, requesting that custody be imposed as a preventive measure,” states the information from the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.
