President: Gov't encourages perpetrator, repeatedly abuses victim, instead of distancing from violence, even verbally

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili declared on Monday that “the situation in our country, the justification of violence against women and, more so, of its various forms, is alarming.”

The President decried any form of abuse, whether it be verbal or physical.

“In a human, moral sense, I find it incomprehensible how such a non-social, non-solid approach could be. Especially because we are aware that verbal aggression frequently leads to physical violence, which sometimes results in femicide. It turns out that we are canceling with one hand what is written on paper with the other at a time when the government takes pride in implementing the portion of the 12 recommendations that deal with women’s rights and gender.

Moreover, the government does not distance itself from violence, even verbally, on the contrary, it encourages the perpetrator and by doing so, repeatedly abuses the victim. This does not belong to our country, you should be ashamed,” she stressed.
