President Convenes Extraordinary Session of Parliament to Address NBG Council Vacancy

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has called an extraordinary session of Parliament, scheduled for July 18 at noon, to discuss the vacant position on the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) Council.

The President has issued a decree calling on the Parliament to convene, intending to discuss and vote on the candidate for the Board of the National Bank presented by the President to the Parliament on May 24, 2024, as well as probable issues included in the agenda of the extraordinary session, to avoid prolonging the process of appointing the Board of the National Bank.

According to the President’s Administration, the selection process was conducted transparently and within the required timeframe. On May 24, 2024, the President presented a highly qualified candidate selected by an independent commission, despite which the Parliament has yet to initiate consideration of the candidacy at any level.

The administration of the President of Georgia officially applied to the Parliament of Georgia regarding involvement in observing the work of the Selection Commission during the stage of selecting candidates for NBG Council membership. The Parliament did not accept this offer.
