PM vows commitment to eradicate corruption through good faith and concrete action
“We aim to completely cleanse the entire system of corruption,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze assured journalists.
The Prime Minister emphasised that very specific, tangible steps have already been taken in this direction.
“Even before we initiated active measures, Georgia was recognised as one of the European countries with the lowest levels of corruption. We consistently ranked ahead of seven or eight EU member states in this regard. Over the past year and a half, the situation has improved qualitatively with every step we have taken. I can make a straightforward promise: if anyone has doubts or concerns about corruption starting today or yesterday, they can bring any topic to us, and all questions will be addressed. I assure you that everything carried out with the involvement of the government is done in good faith. Ask questions, and you will receive answers on all topics. Our goal remains to fully cleanse the system of corruption. Very specific, tangible measures have been implemented to achieve this,” the Prime Minister stated.
Kobakhidze also affirmed that “the law will be applied with full severity against all categories of crime, whether it involves corruption, organised crime, drug trafficking, or politically motivated crimes.”
The Prime Minister noted that the previous approach to crime was comparatively lenient, which he believes was a mistake.
“When the damage exceeds GEL 150, criminal legislation is straightforward: the prosecutor’s office is obliged to initiate proceedings, and detention often follows. The court then decides on preventive measures. In the past, the approach to crime was relatively lenient, which I believe was wrong. It became clear that a more stringent stance on drug-related offences could help prevent the spread of drugs in our country. Similarly, a stricter attitude towards organised crime and politically motivated crimes was necessary. Until laws were fully enforced across these areas, problems persisted.
From this point forward, everyone should bear in mind that the law will be enforced stringently against all categories of crime, be it corruption, organised crime, drug offences, or politically motivated crimes. This is the commitment we make to society on behalf of the government,” Kobakhidze concluded.
