PM Kobakhidze: Close ties with Georgia serve Europe’s interests, but certain bureaucrats act under outside influence

“Statements targeting Georgia ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council’s meeting in Luxembourg represent yet another attack on the Georgian people,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said today during a press briefing.

Responding to remarks by European officials, the head of government asserted that while many EU member states appreciate Georgia’s political and economic importance, certain unelected bureaucrats are acting against Europe’s own strategic interests.

“We have become accustomed to attacks on the Georgian people coming from the European bureaucracy, and this is nothing more than another attack on the Georgian people and on our country, which is deeply regrettable,” Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister emphasised that close bilateral cooperation remains genuinely advantageous to the European Union, blaming external pressure for driving hostility among select European politicians.

“There are numerous countries in the European Union that understand Georgia’s importance very well from both a political and economic perspective. However, there are appointed bureaucrats and politicians who act not in accordance with Europe’s objective interests, but under the influence of other forces, which is most unfortunate,” Kobakhidze noted.

Reiterating his criticism, the Prime Minister added: “It is unequivocally in Europe’s objective interest to maintain the closest possible cooperation with Georgia. That is the EU’s true strategic interest. Yet some individuals do not act in line with those interests and continuously attack the Georgian people—an entirely unacceptable phenomenon.”
