PM: EU member states show shift in stance, but European Commission rigidity blocks reset in relations

“While notable progress has been observed among individual European member states, a rigid stance by European Commission leadership continues to block a reset in bilateral relations,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze declared during a press briefing today.

Responding to questions regarding the potential overhaul of relations with the European Union, the head of government stressed that Georgia remains fully open to unconditional dialogue, blaming specific European bureaucrats for stalling progress.

“On our part, there is complete readiness for dialogue and discussion on every topic. There are no closed issues. We are ready for discussion. If a healthy approach is adopted, nothing will stand in the way of resetting relations, but up to this point, we remain in a waiting mode,” Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister drew a clear distinction between the evolving attitudes of EU member state governments and the leadership of the European Commission in Brussels.

“There is a substantial shift at the individual country level, though I could hardly say the same regarding the leadership of the European Commission. Unfortunately, the European Commission leadership still has a rigid attitude, which is regrettable. If the position of the European Commission leadership is revised, relations will be reset,” PM Kobakhidze noted.
