People’s Power: October 4 ideologically thwarted overthrows; those involved must be held accountable

“On October 4, not only were the attempts at overthrows and revolutions halted, but the very idea was shattered, and all desire for such actions vanished, including among the majority of supporters of the United National Movement. There was a shared realisation that there would never be another illegal attempt to change the government in Georgia. On that day, the ideological foundation for overthrow was definitively broken,” stated MP Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of the People’s Power party.

According to Macharashvili, “even supporters of the United National Movement are no longer participating in revolutionary scenarios.”

“The most significant development is that, as of October 4, the notion of any illegal changes to the government has come to an end. Those who took part in the attempt at overthrow must be held accountable. It is high time to put an end to the impunity whereby some believe that being a journalist or a politician grants them immunity, whether it’s burning property, throwing Molotov cocktails, tearing down fences, setting fire to premises, or harassing politicians or their families. Such actions must no longer go unpunished in Georgia. Everyone is subject to Georgian law, as stipulated by legislation,” Guram Macharashvili concluded.
